Thanks to all the students and parents that made CHINESE NEW YEAR such a great success! We could not do this amazing event without the great work of many volunteers!
It was a great event with over 800 people attending! Thank you for your hard work!
This week is Parent/Teacher Conference week. Ms. Adams is out of town, if you need to make an appointment with her, please email her for a time after March 4th.
We are also in charge of food for Parent/Teacher Conference night on Thursday. Our "Theme" is crockPot Soups, salads, bread and dessert. It is an easy, yummy meal for the teachers to enjoy while taking a break during conference time. We are still in need of more soups and salads! Please sign up today at: Parent/Teacher Conference SCLA Food Please pass the word along that we are short food and need to round up some more volunteers! THANK YOU in advance for all your hard work to help our teachers and staff out!
Thursday, Feb. 27th is also UNITY IN THE COMMUNITY hosted by the Chamber of Commerce. SCLA is a big supporter of this event, and SCLA SENIOR DANNY BISHOP is putting this event together for his Senior Capstone Project. Juniors volunteering at this event need to "dress to impress!" and make sure they are there during their sign up times.

Happy February!
It's hard to believe that it is February already. This year is flying by!
Here is a quick update on each grade level:
12th GRADE CAPSTONE ACTION PROJECTS
The SCLA inaugural class of 2013 is volunteering over 1260 hours to the community just this year to complete their projects!
The class of 2013 is working hard to complete their projects this spring. Some of our projects are still in need of financial help to complete. We are appreciative of our sponsors McDonalds and Longmont United Hospital for their help. If you would like to sponsor contact Ms. Adams or Mrs. Kohn. Some of our specific needs are:
- Marly and Lina need some help finding a company to either donate or help with the cost of cement for playground area at the YMCA -
- Jack is looking for sponsors for holes for the golf tournament that will help Emergency Family Assistance here in Longmont.
- Austin and Kailee are hosting a four Saturday soccer camp in March for kids at Columbine Elementary and help covering the cost of T-shirts and trophies.
- Valarie and Anthony want your old shoes as they work with Soles4Souls. Boots, flip-flops, high heels, you name it, they can take them! Drop off shoes at SCHS, or let us know and we can pick them up.
- Austin and Noah want your extra change! Help Peace and Service for Africa with your spare change this month. Drop off at SCHS.
Soon, volunteer opportunities will be listed here for Senior Capstone Projects.
SCLA 9, 10 and 11- PAY IT FORWARD!
Volunteer for these projects so others who follow you will volunteer for your projects.
Mark these events on your calendar and join us for the following SCLA Capstone Projects!
- Clarissa is working with LiveWell Longmont and the Healthy series begins this month! Join Clarissa at the Longmont Library on MONDAY, FEBRUARY 11th from 6:30-8:30, Watch the movie "Weight of the Nations" followed by a panel discussion on the obesity problem in the US.

Summer of 2014
Nicaragua
We are finding with our graduating seniors that SCLA is really setting them apart from the competition as they apply for college. When so many students have great grades, volunteer work, extra-curricular activities, what is the one component that sets them apart? LEADERSHIP. With SCLA, leadership is not just a word. It is who we are and what we do.
- Get your hands dirty! Build a school in a small village.
- You will have the chance to use your Spanish skills or take immersion lessons in Spanish.
- End your evening with daily LEADERSHIP discussions with local leaders.
- Play with local children joining in games of soccer or baseball
- Visit a turtle hatching project and take in the amazing wildlife
- Tour a coffee plantation
- Visit local markets
- See the Masaya Volcano
- Beach time!

Happy Winter Break!!
Hope all of our SCLA families are enjoying time off and time together. With the events of Sandy Hook right before the break it has been a difficult time for all of us to see the loss of those teachers, administrators and young lives.
We do everything in our power at SCHS to keep your students safe. I am grateful to work with such amazing professionals and your great students.
We are asking students to make paper snowflakes to send to the students at Sandy Hook. Bring them to school on Thursday, January 3rd to the box by Ms. Adams door. Make as many as you can to show them that students in Colorado care about them!!

This year we are holding our 2nd Annual Dodgeball Tournament/Silent Auction. We will be benefiting a young man, Trey Tatham, a 5 year old, who was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma on December 12, 2012. This is a soft tissue cancer which accounts for 4% of all childhood cancers. 350 cases are diagnosed each year in the United States and the majority of these are in children younger than the age of 9. Fortunately for Trey the Cancer is only located in his ear canal and nowhere else in his body. He has a long road of treatments and tests ahead of him. Trey's father (Ty) is the current Mead High School head wrestling coach, he has a mother, Jennifer and 2 siblings.

This week in SCLA
SCLA 10 went to the Everest Restaurant to enjoy food from NEPAL! We also enjoyed the owner singing and playing his drum for us!
SCLA 10 also had a great guest speaker on RESPECT! JP Butler facilitated a great discussion on respect and got the students really thinking about how leaders need to be respectful in so many ways.
SCLA 9 wrapped up their unit on VISION with the movie OCTOBER SKY and the students shared some great projects on vision!
SCLA 12 has their Capstone Projects approved and are ready to start working on them. We will begin to feature their projects in the blog. Many of these projects need SCLA 9,10 and 11 to help them be successful. Many volunteer opportunities will exist. They also had a great guest speaker who helped them with teamwork ideas. Thanks to Joel Champion.
Get out there and sell some wreaths and join us for Yogurt in November! SCLA is a great place to be!
THANKS FOR MAKING SCLA AWESOME!

ALL SCLA HANDS ON DECK! VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY!
MONDAY OCT 1st 2:30-9pm @ SCHS
SCLA is proud to help sponsor the Chamber of Commerce Candidate debates. This forum is provided as a community service to allow people to hear the candidates and discuss the issues on the ballot. Both 9th and 10th grade SCLA worked with outside facilitator Bob Urquidi focusing on "Breaking barriers to achieving your goals." Students had a great chance to think on their goals, and then break some boards!
