Happy Winter Break!!

Hope all of our SCLA families are enjoying time off and time together.  With the events of Sandy Hook right before the break it has been a difficult time for all of us to see the loss of those teachers, administrators and young lives.

We do everything in our power at SCHS to keep your students safe.  I am grateful to work with such amazing professionals and your great students.

We are asking students to make paper snowflakes to send to the students at Sandy Hook.  Bring them to school on Thursday, January 3rd to the box by Ms. Adams door.   Make as many as you can to show them that students in Colorado care about them!!

DODGEBALL TIME!!!
This year we are holding our 2nd Annual Dodgeball Tournament/Silent Auction. We will be benefiting a young man, Trey Tatham, a 5 year old, who was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma on December 12, 2012. This is a soft tissue cancer which accounts for 4% of all childhood cancers. 350 cases are diagnosed each year in the United States and the majority of these are in children younger than the age of 9. Fortunately for Trey the Cancer is only located in his ear canal and nowhere else in his body. He has a long road of treatments and tests ahead of him. Trey's father (Ty) is the current Mead High School head wrestling coach, he has a mother, Jennifer and 2 siblings.

Happy Friday!

It's  been a great week in SCLA!

9th grade-

Mr. Lathrop is recovering nicely from shoulder surgery, we wish him well.  He is organizing SCLA to care for the SCHS flowerbeds and sign areas around the school.  This is a great opportunity to clean up around our own school and make a difference right at home.  Thanks Mr. Lathrop!

Mr Lathrop and Mrs. Gurule's class took a quiz to see what their leadership strengths and weaknesses are.   Ask your student to share their test scores with you, and even take the test yourself!

10th grade-

We were sad to lose Mr. Carpenter as he takes on a new opportunity in Alaska.  Ms. Adams has the chance now to step into a larger role and will teach this course as well as continue on as program coordinator.  The 10th graders are working on finding cultural universals that connect us together, and are working on a presentation now.

12th grade-

Mrs. Kohn is working with SCLA 12 to finalize their plans on their capstone projects.  We will highlight a project weekly in our blog.  The seniors have some great ideas rolling forward!   The 12th graders have found out about TED talks and have heard a couple great ones.  What is your favorite leadership TED Talk?

Guest Speakers

Coming up this month- Bob the board breaking guy will work with SCLA 9 &10 and the Etiquette Coach is coming to work on those table manners!  Know someone who would be a great guest speaker for SCLA?  Contact Ms Adams

Volunteer opportunities:

Blue Mountain is looking for students to help tutor before and after school.  See Ms. Adams for info if you are interested!

MONDAY OCT 1-  ALL HANDS ON DECK!    SCLA joins with the Longmont Chamber of Commerce to host a CANDIDATE NIGHT here at SCHS at 5pm.  Candidates from the many races will be here to debate. SCLA students will be needed in various positions to make this event come together.  This is a great chance for us to work with the community and provide a valuable service.  Sign ups will be on Ms Adams door starting Monday, Sept. 10th.

SCLA 9th grade retreat last minute questions!

SLCAers

A couple of last minute items!
We are so excited to have you join us for our retreat.  This will be a great experience!

Some commonly asked questions:

* Do I need a sleeping bag? - No, the YMCA provides bedding.

*How do I get a hold of someone in the event of an emergency? -
The phone number to the YMCA is 800-777-9622
Carrie Adams- SCLA Program Coordinator cell phone number is:
303-330-7708 ( Cell coverage is spotty in Estes!)

* I will be picking up my son or daughter early- what is the address to the YMCA? 2515 Tunnel Road, Estes Park, CO 80511

* My son/daughter has a medical condition- who should  I talk to?   We will have a table to check in to share info with the SCLA teachers that will be attending.

* We are not getting these emails to the addresses we want them- will you add a new email address?   We send all of our information via Infinite Campus.  Students should get used to checking their SVVSD accounts, and parents will need to modify their contact info.  We are unable to make changes.  We apologize for any inconvenience this causes.

* Who is my child rooming with? The ambassadors made the room lists by putting students randomly in rooms.  Students are expected to stay in the rooms they are assigned for safety reasons.  Part of leadership is learning to adapt to unique situations.  This is one night.  Please be open to meeting new people regardless of who is in your room with you!

*Where else can I get info for SCLA?
Our blog is: http://sclaweekly.blogspot.com/

Our SCLA Website ( you can access from the SCHS website)
https://sites.google.com/a/svvsd.org/scla/home
