SCLA Seniors~  PROJECTS AND COLLEGE NOTES

We are so excited to have you in the fall and look forward to an amazing year with your Capstone Projects.  I have met with Mrs. Kohn  and Mr. Finnestead and we are working to  fine tune the process and look for ways to help you be more successful with your projects.

That being said, your projects are all still under review.  Some may not get final approval or may still require additional information prior to approval.  Some two person projects are under review as there is a concern that the project scope is not large enough to warrant two people working on it all year.   It might be good to consider some other ideas as back up plans in the event your project is not approved.

Another possibility is that you have changed your mind and found something during the summer that is more interesting to you and you would like to do another project.  Gather information so that you can present that to us in the fall.

You will be given time in the fall to work on new ideas or fine tune your current ideas, so don't panic!
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me via email anytime this summer.

Also, many of you are beginning you college applications.  Please do not forget to include SCLA on your resume or consider using some of the events you have done to write your essays.   For example, being an integral part of planning a leadership evening for elementary school students can be a great essay.   I am also happy to write letters of recommendation for you if needed.  Use SCLA to the fullest to help you achieve your goals. That is why we exist!!

TRAVEL UPDATE
International travel is not an "official" part of SCLA.  However, we offer OPTIONAL trips to enhance your leadership experience during the four years of SCLA.

Summer of 2014
Nicaragua

We are finding with our graduating seniors that SCLA is really setting them apart from the competition as they apply for college.  When so many students have great grades, volunteer work, extra-curricular activities, what is the one component that sets them apart?  LEADERSHIP.   With SCLA, leadership is not just a word.  It is who we are and what we do.

2014 Nicaragua trip will be the experience of a life-time.

Info on Nicaragua
  • Get your hands dirty!  Build a school in a small village.
  • You will have the chance to use your Spanish skills or take  immersion lessons in Spanish.
  • End your evening with daily LEADERSHIP discussions with local leaders.
  • Play with local children joining in games of soccer or baseball
  • Visit a turtle hatching project and take in the amazing wildlife
  • Tour a coffee plantation
  • Visit local markets
  • See the Masaya Volcano
  • Beach time!
We are partnering with the ME TO WE group to give us a little more hands on, service learning experience.  Imagine the college essay you will be able to write after this adventure.

Let me know if you would like more info @ adams_carrie@svvsd.org

Happy Winter Break!!

Hope all of our SCLA families are enjoying time off and time together.  With the events of Sandy Hook right before the break it has been a difficult time for all of us to see the loss of those teachers, administrators and young lives.

We do everything in our power at SCHS to keep your students safe.  I am grateful to work with such amazing professionals and your great students.

We are asking students to make paper snowflakes to send to the students at Sandy Hook.  Bring them to school on Thursday, January 3rd to the box by Ms. Adams door.   Make as many as you can to show them that students in Colorado care about them!!

Fortunately for Trey the Cancer is only located in his ear canal and nowhere else in his body. He has a long road of treatments and tests ahead of him. SCHS OPEN HOUSE:

Know an 8th grader trying to decide what high school to attendWe help them with that decision making process at the SCHS open house on TUESDAY DEC 11th from 7-8pm.  Invite those incoming freshmen to see why SCHS is the best school in the district.  We don't want anyone to suffer the pains of having to hear us chant "ya shoulda been a Raptor!"
